Travel with Your Bike by Train in Japan

Shinkansen Express Train

Traveling by train is a convenient way to explore Japan with your bike. This guide will help you navigate bringing your bike on trains to Nagano, ensuring a smooth journey.

Bringing Bikes on Trains in Japan: The Basics

Pack your bike in a bag:

Bikes must be disassembled and packed in a bag. Typically, this involves removing the front wheel. You cannot bring a bike if it is not packed.

Chose your train:

Express train Azusa:

If you are going to Matsumoto city from Tokyo, there is no Shinkansen so you should take Azusa express train from Shinjuku station. Bikes in rinko bags are also permitted, but space can be tight during peak hours.

Hokuriku Shinkansen (Tokyo to Nagano):

If you are going to Nagano city, this is the best choice. Bikes in rinko bags are allowed. Store them in the luggage area or behind the last row of seats.

Tips for a Smooth Journey with your bike on train

Avoid Peak Hours: Travel outside rush hours for more space. Keep in mind that the local trains especially in Tokyo are very crowded in peak commuting hour and it is barely possible to take your bike in side the train. So if you start in the morning, consider to ride directly to the Tokyo or Shinjuku station where express trains depart. Shinkansen can be took without seat reservation which costs additional fee, but when you don’t have seat reservation and there is no place, you should. be standing during the journey on the deck. It greatly depends on the season and time whether you could take free seat or not, so if you are unsure, consider book a seat with a fee in advance for the tranquility. Generally station staffs avoid giving you a clear answer when you ask them if the train is full or not.
